The origin of fasting
Rooted in history for millennia, fasting looks back on an ancient tradition. As an integral part of human nature and culture, it plays a significant role in all world religions: As early as antiquity, some 2,500 years ago, the physician and teacher Hippocrates recommended abstaining from food as a therapeutic measure. Over the years, further forms of fasting developed, including the so-called therapeutic fasting according to Buchinger. The purification of body, mind, and soul is central to this practice.

What is meant by Buchinger fasting?
Therapeutic fasting originated with the physician Otto Buchinger and is therefore also called Buchinger fasting. This form of fasting is used not only for preventative healthcare but also for certain illnesses. Unlike conventional fasting, this form involves supplying the body with a small amount of energy. According to Buchinger, therapeutic fasting works on several levels:
• the medical level,
• the spiritual
• and the psychosocial.
His form of fasting is also known as "fasting for healthy people" because it involves the voluntary and conscious abstinence from solid food and stimulants. This relieves the body for a specific period, allowing it to cleanse itself from within. Therapeutic fasting programs like this are therefore much more than simply "not eating."
